Statement
Explain Compass components and use.
      2 Conditions In a Classroom environment and with the aid of an adult instructor.
Sixty minute instruction period, ninety minutes for first practice
 period, one hundred fifteen minutes for second practice period.
      3 Standards 1. Identify Compass components.
2. Identify proper day and night use of compass.
3. Identify what Pace Count is and how found.
      4 Caution Statement 1. Present this instruction in a discussion/seminar format.
2. Encourage participation and ask students to cite personal
    experiences.
      5 Pretest Begin instruction by asking students if any have used a compass in
 any situation outside of training scenarios.
      6 Orientation
Statement
Explain to students the importance of accurately using the compass for future use.
      7 Demonstration 1. Name each component of the compass, explain and illustrate use of same.
2. Demonstrate proper use of compass for day time, night time, and map alignment use.
      8 Task Steps 1. Ask students to name each component and use of same.
2. Ask students to demonstrate one of the three methods of use of compass.  
      9 Practice 1. Obtain personal Pace Counts.
2. Students will break up into groups of 3 and each Young Marine
    in group will do the Triangularization Course at least twice.
     10 Evaluation Monitor groups as to their accuracy at returning to Triangularization Course originating point.

1.  Ask students to locate and describe the information found in the Legend.

2.  Ask students to identify the items represented by each color on a map.

3.  Ask students to locate, by coordinates, the following points:

      a.  Hill

      b.  Saddle

      c.  Cliff

      d.  Ridge

      e.  Valley

      f.  Depression

4.  Ask students to identify objects at specific grid coordinates.

5.  Ask students to identify the percentage of slope between grid

      coordinates ___  ___  ___  ___  ___  ___ and

      ___  ___  ___  ___  ___  ___

     9  Practice  1.  Students will identify coordinates of objects in immediate area of students present position.

2.  Students will demonstrate how to orient their maps without the use of and with a compass.

3.  Students will find their position by the triangulation method.
4.  Students will demonstrate hoe to find North without a compass.

    10  Evaluation Monitor students during practice phase as to their ability to put their knowledge of the compass, map, and land navigation to practical use.
