Capitol Area Young Marines, Austin, Texas, have one Recruit
Training cycle per year. Each year at Spring Break, The
Capitol Area Young Marines travel to Camp Bullis Army
Training Facility, Part of the Fort Sam Houston Army Training
Facility, located on the north side of San Antonio, Texas.
This is a total emergence training! This has proven to provide
the best Young Marine Recruits with the best training. You
do not lose the training edge that normally happens when
our Future Young Marines have to go home at the end of each
training day.
Capitol Area Young Marines have a Recruit Platoon that starts
the next day after Recruit Graduation. They wear Ball Caps
with Recruit" on it, plus Recruit "T" Shirts. They participate
in all Drills, but do not participate in the special events until
they have graduated. They have a very good Recruit Retention
rate while still keeping the interest alive with the recruits.
Procedures for Operating a One Week Recruit Training
The Capital Area Young Marines is the only known unit in the Young Marine program in Texas
that has developed a one week recruit training (Boot Camp) procedure. The training program
was developed over a two year period and has been used in training over 10 recruit platoons.
While the Young Marine national directive calls for a 13 week recruit training of 26 hours, the
Capital Area unit has combined the required class schedule into a one week time frame. This
was done to shorten the training schedule and to provide the bonding experience known only
to those who have been through this rite of passage.
The following sections will cover required adult instructor staffing, training procedures, Young
Marine NCO staff training, safety procedures.
Adult Instructor Staffing:
During the recruit training period there will be no less than two male instructors on site at all
times. If there is at least one female recruit in training there will have to be a female instructor
present. The primary role of the adult instructors is to provide guidance and safety to the Young
Marine instructors and the recruits. The recruit training will be run on a system similar to the
Boy Scout’s “two deep” program where no recruit will be in a secluded situation with a single
adult instructor. There will always be two instructors present.
The adult instructors will monitor all recruit training and activities. While the Young Marine
NCOs will be giving the classes, conducting close order drill (COD) and directing the recruits, the
adult instructors will provide guidance and instruction as needed. The adult instructors will work
with and advise the YM instructors in their role as instructors.
The adult instructors will provide counseling and guidance to any recruit who may need help
in the training program. For some recruits the training week is the first time they have been
away from home and the training is very intense. These recruits may need a word of
encouragement or a little pep talk. No matter how hard the training seems to a recruit, there is
no way a recruit can not finish training with a little hard work and positive attitude.
The adult instructors will be responsible for the dispensing of all prescription medicine to
recruits. There will be a “Sick Call” three times a day. All dispensing of medication will be done
by two adult instructors. This will be a method to cross check to see that the right recruit gets
the right medication at the right dose. A record of each dosage will be kept in the sick call log.
The adult instructors will be on call to handle any sickness or accident that may arise and will
determine what course of action will be followed. The adult staff must always remember that
the safety and welfare of the recruit is most important.
Each evening the adult staff and the YM NCOs will review the progress of the recruits. This
will help determine which recruits need extra instruction or guidance. This method will help
decide which recruit will be assigned the role of squad leader or guide. This method will also be
used in the selection of recruits given the meritorious rank of Private First Class (PFC) and the
Honor Recruit. The guide for how many recruits make PFC is 10% of the number of recruits. The
Honor Recruit is for the most outstanding recruit but is not required. If there is not a single
outstanding recruit then the award is not given.
The adult instructor staff, while not directly involved in all of the training of recruits, must be
at all times present a correct image. Uniforms will be clean, ironed and worn properly. Boots will
be polished. Hair will be trimmed and neat. Female instructors will follow the YM guide on how to
wear their hair. From reveille to lights out the adult and YM instructors will present a
professional and correct image to the recruits.
Training Procedures:
The training schedule for recruit training covers all required subjects and also includes two
Physical Fitness Tests and two written exams. Attached is the weekly schedule of classes and
other activities. While the age range of recruits may be from 8 to 17, the subject matters are
taught in a manor that all recruits will be able to learn. The adult and YM instructors must be
alert to see if any recruit is having learning problems. If a recruit is experiencing difficulty in
learning, a YM instructor will be assigned as a tutor. Also during the week there will be study
periods where the squad leaders will help as needed.
While the experience of recruit training is hectic and confusing the main goal is to provide a
basically trained Young Marine. This fact must be in the mind of every adult and YM instructor.
The development of a motivated Young Marine starts in recruit training and is built in on the
following years.
Young Marine NCO Staff Training:
While a number of the classes during recruit training are given by the adult staff the majority
of classes are presented by the YM NCO staff. The YM staff is composed of Corporals and above.
All YM staff should have a knowledge of the subject matters and experience in class
presentation and close order drill. Prior the recruit training the adult staff will instruct the YM
staff in any and all manors of instruction and performance of the role of an instructor.
The YM staff must know the level of intensity that will have the desired effect in training. The
YM staff must know that while motivating the recruits to reach higher levels they have to keep
in mind that the YM staff must never treat the recruits with contempt, humiliation, disrespect nor
place the recruit in an unsafe position.
While the role of an instructor may be desired by a Young Marine, the adult staff must select
the YM staff member with due consideration. The future of a Young Marine may be shaped by
the role of their YM instructors. The YM staff must present a role model that the recruits will look
up to and respect.
Safety Procedures:
One of the primary rules of recruit training is the safety of the recruits and staff. All
precautions must be made to insure that safety is assured. The adult staff must plan on how
the training is conducted and performed. Interior guard will be established so fire watches will
be on hand during the night time. No recruit will make a head call during the night without going
with another recruit. There will be no running during the night time hours. All recruits must stay
in their huts during the night.
All activities during recruit training will be monitored by the adult staff whether it is chow
time, class time, COD time or evening head calls. Safety is the sole responsibility of the adult
staff and every effort must be made to insure that the recruits, the YM staff and the adult staff
remain safe and secure during the recruit training week.
